The Matsunaga Stone Company in Osaka Japan makes the King range of Whetstones, they are the oldest and best-known maker of Japanese Waterstones outside of Japan. The King Whetstones (Waterstones) are unlike other synthetic stones as they consist of aluminium oxide, carbide, and nitride particles fused together and mixed with a clay-like bonder that is then baked at high temperatures to form the stone. The resultant stones are moderately soft to use and the bonding clay allows the abrasive particles to release easily for consistent sharpening.
